AlternaMálaga I August 17, 2008
Posted by Administrator in : kraziness, málaka , 2commentsDespite the time of year Málaga city has more to offer than the Feria, boquerones and a dip in the sea. So I’m going to try and single out places, activities and people that are generally beyond the radar of conventional media. So let’s begin with the newest spaces on the scene. Azafrán, on Calle San Juan Letrán is a cosey restaurant where you can fill your belly with typical Andalusian dishes. Those of you with a more adventurous palate should still check Azafrán out since Abhijate has recycled his eco-shop to include a few exotic delicacies that you can wash down with a selection of organic drinks that include spelt beer.

You´ll find Blue Poison on Calle Dos Aceras, the perfect shop if you want to dress Camden Town style without getting on a plane. Best thing about it is that for just 10 € they’ll print your own design on your favourite t-shirt with a professional result. Don’t miss María Embiz’s original artwork that adorns the shop – her exhibition called “Dream and Desire” has been on show at Cinco Anillos bookshop around the corner. So if you’re interested in oriental culture, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, spirituality, psychology and philosophy, so you walk down to Calle Mariblanca 6 and explore their selection. It’s been open less than a year but their exhibition and seminar room, Espacio CA, is so popular that they’re already programming artists for March 2009. At last there’s a space for up and coming artists without the red tape or nepotism.
From a green point of view, we have to recommend the activities organised by Ruedas Redondas, an association that promotes cycling as a sustainable, healthy and cheap mode of transport which is less hostile to the citizen. Come September they’ll be back with their monthly two-wheel goings-on. Both “Enbíciate” (first Saturday of the month) and their critical mass (last Friday of the month) start at Plaza de la Marina. They also put together cycling routes around scenic areas in the countryside, a very cool proposition since no matter how alternative the capital is, it’s always good to get out of the city.

One of Málaga’s yoga pioneers, Enrique Moya from Centro Yantra, recommends the chiringuito at the Gibralfaro Castle. “Instead of the usual can of coke and crisps, they serve delicious salads which are
easily digested thanks to the amazing views from the place”.
