playa del carmen by sara shaikh

we’re happy in playa del carmen, a little piece of coast that feels a bit like malibu, what with all the long haired surfers and surferettes with bikinis to match their boards. we sell our leather handicrafts, and it feels good when people appreciate your work. wherever we go there’s a mac donalds type guy that sells jewellery that he doesn’t make himself really cheap. i guess we are more of a boutique, we invest time and energy in our products, so theya re more beautiful, i am sure. anyways selling PAKITA means we have to change our plane ticket, since it is set to leave LA at then end of may, fingers crossed we can still get a flight we like.

Thanks to the Adriá family we have a Chocolate Museum in Madrid. Don’t let the entrance full of fine bombons in glass cases scare you, we recommend you study the pieces in this innovative collection thoroughly. Named after a Guinean plantation, at Cacao Sampaka they only use the most authentic ingredients in their handmade production. Surrounded by temptation, we dare you to try their original combinations of chocolate with parma cheese or fried corn with dark chocolate. If you need anything else remotely chocolate related, this is the place to come, from chocolate candles to cooking utensils, its all here. Stop at the bar area for a quick fix of happiness or sit down in the restautrant for a light menu followed by a cocoa dessert, claro.

rasta door in Granada, Nicaragua by sara shaikh

we came, we saw and we´re leaving. i feel like often we only scratch the surface of the places we visit, i feel like often the natives close up and are only interested in a commercial exchange with the rich gringos that come to visit them. i discover that in nicaragua i belong to this terrible category, i take it in my stride and do what i can, share here and there. gifts. something. but a lot more is needed to balance the scale.
today we return to costa gringa, the mission is to sell our trusty steed, PAKITA, we´ll see how long it takes and where we go from there. i am beginning to feel the need to stop being a foreigner, even though at this stage in the game, what with my 100% hybrid nationality, this may never be the case.
