south of the border September 30, 2004

the funny thing about transatlantik travel is that your body arrives on the new continent a lot faster than the rest of your being. in this case, now that the rest of me is finally here, its nearly time to go. we’re headed south of the border, always south no matter what. taking into account my acute hypersensibility, i’d say my love for travel is a little masochistik: its hard to leave friends and family behind. every stop means new beginnings and goodbyes…life in transit. no matter what you do, you always miss out on something in the place you’re leaving, and there are always new fruits at the next stop. drunk on confusion and uncertainty. let curiosity be your guide. explore new flavours_flippit0uT.

    minority report September 29, 2004

We flew into the Empire of Excess, specific location: Los Angeles…so well-known and a stranger at the same time. I’ll never forget the feeling of dejá vu I had when exploring this peculiar city at first. Sweeping from the desert to the Pacific, without a centre: a bunch of suburbs connected by spaguetti-like freeways, criss-crossing and never free of traffic. Taking into account we’ve all been consuming images of LA for so long no wonder they seem familiar even to a newbie.
And its true that everything is BIG in USA (I make a concerted effort not to call the US “America” for it only a part of this great continent): superwide freeways with 5 lanes each direction, small cokes that look like the Euro equivalent of the largest size, or the fear instilled into your average yankee. The images your TV spits at you are perversely hilarious in their sensationalism and lack of content. Good way of keeping the mass’ under control. And yet there exists an inmense minority that CNN or FOX will never tell us about, their votes may not ever be counted, but I assure you they exist, their numbers are rising and they express their opinions about the Bush administration’s conduct. I have no idea what will happen in the next US presidential election, but watch out: no matter how minor a minority it should never be ignored.

4 hours of sleep, looks like summer in Spain is over, but I´m still movin’…The Big Trip is about to start. I don´t know why, but in Spanish I always call it The Dream Trip, I guess there are subconscious reasons for my choice of words. So in a week, we cross the world to LA where we´ll get our vehicle “Pakita” all ready to travel south down Mexico and Central America all the way to Costa Rica and Panama. There we plan to sell the car and continue with our backpacks to Venezuela and Brazil! I think of these places and I shriek with joy.

    marroko + more September 2, 2004

I’ve crossed the 14 kilometer Straight of Gibraltar about 4 times now, its been about 9 years between the 1st and most recent visit. Even though each trip has its own pekuliar charm, it looks like both the even expeditions have taken complicated turns. But I have to say muddles and misunderstandings might just be part of the majik of morroko….
…cityfolk (in Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat or Tangier) are ever so forward, mostly for commercial reasons. They speak every tongue, they can guide you around the medina, or have an excellent place for you to stay. Getting from A to B in one piece is part of the adventure. Culture clash (for those 14 kms take you to the tip of another continent), confusion and the lack of a common language are part of the travelling experience. Until time slows down and you enter somebody´s home where the opportunity arises to discover an open and friendly people.
